Virtual Race - Celebrate the Marathon’s role in democracy since 490 B.C. with a historic 24.5 miles run
The Democracy Awareness Project is organizing the event in the spirit of the original race from the battlefield of Marathon to the cradle of democracy in Athens.
24.5 miles was the distance for the original 1897 Athens Olympic Marathon. It was lengthened to 26.2 miles for the London Olympic Games from Windsor castle to the Royal Box in the Olympic Stadium. The Boston Marathon on Patriots Day was lengthened to 26.2 miles in 1924.
This run is not just about athleticism – it's about celebrating democracy. Let's honor the spirit of the Athenian runner and all who stand up for their communities.
