The Need: Imagine what it feels like to learn that a child has a life-limiting or life-threatening illness or disease? Thousands of families every year hear this tragic news; and in many instances, jobs are lost, bank accounts are drained, and each member of the household struggles both emotionally and physically to survive. In this situation, children are the most vulnerable. Not only does the child with a serious illness face intensive, sometimes radical treatments, but siblings in the family also find their lives disrupted and radically changed due to the medical needs of their brother or sister. Families with medically fragile children have many demands on their time and energy. A typical day is likely to include trips to medical appointments, home health visits, potential hospitalization, medication schedules, as well as the ongoing needs of siblings in the household.
What does it mean to Project Joy and Hope? When we project something, indeed it stands out; and Project Joy and Hope (PJH, a 501c3 established in 2000, based in Pasadena, Texas) is a nationally recognized leader in providing both joy and hope for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. PJH serves as an anchor for these families when they are most vulnerable, when a child is diagnosed with a life -threatening condition. The primary goal of PJH is to ensure the health and wellness of the entire family at this challenging time. The dedicated PJH staff and more than 600 volunteers have a well-established reputation and strong collaborative relationship with social work departments of Texas Children’s Hospital, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, MD Anderson Pediatric Cancer Center, and Houston Hospice to ensure that children and parents have the pediatric palliative care supportive services they need when tragedy strikes.
Agency Summary: Project Joy and Hope’s campus includes 12 three-bedroom homes for medically fragile children and their families and is the first pediatric palliative care center in Texas. The center has a special area (PJH Children's Center) which is designed to be a welcoming place of support for all children living at The Tulip Project, our residential facility located on the same campus, as well as for medically fragile children and their siblings in the greater Houston area community. Activities for children at the palliative care center includes services for children who are ill, as well as their healthy siblings. PJH offers opportunities for children through our Children's Art Program (Creation Station) and Sibshop, as well as various family-oriented activities throughout the year.
