Event Description

The Great Escape: River Run from Crockett is a 14-mile, flat-water paddling race. It is held each October and commemorates the escape of the Muscogee residents of Black Warrior Town from Davie Crockett and the Tennessee Militia during the Creek Indian War. The course begins at the site of historic Black Warrior Town (present day Sipsey, Alabama) and ends at present day Cordova, Alabama near the site where Muscogee sought refuge.

Logistics:

  • Starting at 5:00 AM, October 10, 2026 you can drop off boats at The Forks behind T&R Grocery, 5848 Siipsey Road, Empire, AL 35063. (We will be there to watch boats and gear.)
  • You will drive to and park at Disney Lake, behind Cane Creek Camp and Tackle, 4632 North Massachusetts Avenue, Cordova, AL 35550.
  • The fine folks at Cordova will then shuttle you back to The Forks. The last shuttle should leave by 7:10 AM.
  • ALEA will give us a safety briefing.
  • We will have a period of remembrance for Black Warrior Town.
  • 7:45 boats will begin to enter the water.
  • 8:00 AM the starting horn will sound!
  • We will have water and a portolet at the Lynn's Park (near the Frosty) midway point.
  • We will see you again at Disney Lake!
